As a painter, I choose to celebrate the beauty of the female body. Initially, I was very much influenced by my upbringing in Korea. The patriarchal society I experienced suggested women of my generation should have a passive voice. However, we have since responded by learning how to cope by manifesting strength, endurance and perseverance in our hearts.
Life in North America has equipped me with a voice of sufficient strength that I can transmit through my works of art to be shared with the viewer. Living in two cultures, and struggling to survive as a woman and as a stranger, I evoke feelings of both victimization - screaming, frustration - and hope on the road to maturity.
My distorted life-size female bodies are designed as vehicles that reflect their state of mind instead of sexuality. I use the female body in a metaphoric way, enlisting colorful balls for compositional structure. I strive to make an upbeat statement on behalf of all women.
